Estate Planning: It’s Not Just for the Rich and Famous

Investing Insights

Think estate planning is only for the wealthy? Think again.

Here’s a little secret the financial world doesn’t always lead with: an “estate” is just a fancy word for all the stuff you own. Your car, your house, your savings account, your grandmother’s china set that nobody uses but everyone pretends to love — that’s your estate. And estate planning? It’s simply deciding what happens to all that “stuff” once you’re no longer around to argue about it.

So yes — if you own anything at all, estate planning is for you.

Why Does It Matter?

Without a plan, the state you live in decides how your assets are distributed — and spoiler alert: the government doesn’t know your family dynamics, your wishes, or the fact that you definitely didn’t want your estranged cousin getting the boat. A basic estate plan puts you in control.

At a minimum, a solid plan typically includes:

•  A will — your official “last word” on where things go

•  Beneficiary designations — who gets your retirement accounts and life insurance (hint: these override your will)

•  A durable power of attorney — who makes financial decisions if you’re incapacitated

•  A healthcare directive — your medical wishes, clearly spelled out

It’s Not a “Set It and Forget It” Kind of Thing

Life changes — marriages, divorces, new kids, new assets, and yes, even new opinions about that cousin. Your estate plan should keep up. Reviewing it every few years (or after major life events) helps ensure your plan continues to reflect your wishes.

Ready to Get Started?
